BUY PIXELS, CHANGE LIVES: A 21st CENTURY CALL-TO-ACTION
The Pixel Project, a global volunteer-led virtual non-profit organisation working to end Violence Against Women (VAW), invites you to take part in our first ever Celebrity Male Role Model Pixel Reveal campaign which launched on the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. This campaign aims to raise US$1 million for the VAW cause while inspiring men and women worldwide to work together to end VAW. This year’s beneficiaries are Malaysia’s Women’s Aid Organisation and the U.S.A.’s National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
The campaign encourages a global audience to collectively unveil a million-pixel mystery collage of 4 world-famous celebrity male role models by donating US$1 per pixel. The distinguished line-up includes a Nobel Laureate, a Pulitzer Prize Winner and superstar Environmentalist. These world-exclusive portraits are taken by award-winning international photographer, Jillian Edelstein.
Our male role models have also recorded exclusive public service announcements speaking out against VAW which will be launched as each man is revealed. By highlighting positive male role models, we aim to galvanise men and boys to get on board the cause by demonstrating that they have a major role to play in ending VAW.

Hero Worship Gone Horribly Wrong
Our good friends at the Pixel Project sent me the following link to a pretty incredulous story about a high school asking a rape victim to cheer for her attacker (by name!), and the appellate court that agreed with them.
I encourage you all to read the article and sign the petition.

Thursday, August 19, 2010
The following is reprinted from a post by Regina Yau, Founder and President of the Pixel Project.
Today is World Humanitarian Day (19 August 2010) – a day that celebrates and recognises the work of humanitarian workers everywhere. Humanitarian workers come in all nationalities, ethnicities, genders, ages, shapes, sizes and professions:
They are the on-the-ground aid workers and peacekeepers.
They are the advocacy and campaigning groups.
They are the medical professionals of every level.
They are the researchers, scientists, teachers and mentors.
They are the priests, monks, nuns working amongst the people in the field.
They are the volunteers, professionals and vocationals.
They are white-collar, blue-collar, no collar.
They work to broker peace, eradicate disease, purge hunger and end violence against women (sometimes, at the cost of their own lives).
This UN-sponsored YouTube Public Service Announcement shows all this beautifully (please take 5 minutes of your time today to just watch this video):
In a world where many human rights causes (including Violence Against Women) are still seen as a taboo…
In a world where many human rights causes (including Violence Against Women) are still seen as a non-issue…
In a world where many human rights causes (including Violence Against Women) are still seen as “not my problem”…
We would like to thank:

We would like to thank:
- All our volunteers for donating so much of your time and skills to stand together with us to try to end violence against women worldwide (even if it seems too vast, too futile or too deranged a goal).
- All our partners for all their many decades of hard work to end the cause and their open arms in welcoming The Pixel Project (while we are still in our infancy) to the cause.
- All our supporters, many of whom are survivors who lived to tell the tale and to advocate and campaign against violence against women so other women and girls would not face this in their future.
- All our male supporters who very bravely stepped up to say: “Enough is enough” to the violence against the women in their lives and around the world.
- All our fellow humanitarian workers worldwide who exhibit grace under pressure to face down atrocities, heal wounds of all kinds, rebuild lives and livelihoods and speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves even in the face of violence.
We quote:
“If to be feelingly alive to the sufferings of my fellow-creatures is to be a fanatic, I am one of the most incurable fanatics ever permitted to be at large.”We wish all of you “Happy Humanitarian Day 2010″ and as per William Wilberforce’s quote, let us continue to be “incurable fanatics… at large” together.

Shelving Domestic Violence Scheme
From our Partners at PixelProject comes a link to an article in the guardian.co.uk:
Not to mention the far more dire result of the cuts putting victims directly in harms way.
I am not sure whether a similar protection order in the United States would have saved this child from being beaten to death for "acting like a girl", but having both stories come out on the same day should be a compelling argue to continue funding for this scheme (is it just me or does calling it a "scheme" make it sound like a dastardly and underhanded plot?).
Powers to remove violent partners from family home 'deferred' by coalition, amid fears public protection put at risk by cutsCuts to spending that in the long run will prevent even more spending on physical health care for abused victims, counseling, police protection, police administration of the abuser, cost of jailing, etc. etc. etc.

@ThePixelProject: Lessons from Aisha – A Teachable Moment about Standing Up to End Violence Against Women
Time magazine’s most recent cover picture is possibly the most eloquent piece of journalism of 2010 and it is fitting that this portrait is one of the clearest illustrations of the global pandemic of violence against women.
As Richard Stengel, Managing Editor of Time magazine writes:
Our cover image this week is powerful, shocking and disturbing. It is a portrait of Aisha, a shy 18-year-old Afghan woman who was sentenced by a Taliban commander to have her nose and ears cut off for fleeing her abusive in-laws. Aisha posed for the picture and says she wants the world to see the effect a Taliban resurgence would have on the women of Afghanistan, many of whom have flourished in the past few years. While Mr Stengel explains his decision to run Aisha’s portrait within the context of Time’s commitment to providing a truthful window into the war in Afghanistan, we can also extrapolate a different and more urgent set of messages from Aisha’s portrait: [read the rest of the post here]

Pixel Project's Voters’ Choice Campaign Extended!
Voters’ Choice Celebrity Male Role Model Campaign Extended!
If you haven’t cast your vote and signed the petition for The Pixel Project’s Voters’ Choice Celebrity Male Role Model campaign, you now have a little bit more time!
Momentum is really building now. The campaign is being featured on blogs, fan sites and Facebook pages and mentioned in tweets. There is an upswing in votes, and the gap between our original leader (Alexander Skarsgard) and his two closest competitors (Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal) is closing fast! With so much movement in the standings and so much chatter about the campaign, we decided it wouldn’t be right to shut it down now.
So we have added two weeks to the campaign, bringing it to six weeks altogether. The campaign will now close on 12pm Eastern Standard Time, 30 June 2010.
With the campaign extended, everyone will now get a chance to vote for one of our five fabulous nominees. For those of you who have voted but not signed the petition, here’s your chance to add your signature to the petition.
Remember: both voting and signing the petition is equally important because while your vote will get your choice of Male Role Model nominee selected, the petition will be sent directly to the winning nominees so we need as many signatures as possible to get their attention.
For those who are new to the campaign, voting and signing is easy to do:
Just go to our voting page at http://bit.ly/PixelVote and follow
Step 1 vote!
Step 2 sign the petition for your favourite actor.
Step 3 spread the word if you use Twitter, Facebook or have a blog.
Thanks so much to everyone who has participated to date. Let’s keep those votes and signatures coming!

PixelProject - I've Voted... Have You?
White Ribbon Campaign partner, and all around amazing orgnication The Pixel Project, is a global volunteer-led nonprofit organisation working to end Violence Against Women worldwide. They have a unique and forward-thinking strategy when it comes to fund-raising: online micro-donations.
Their first fundraiser is to raise US$1 million in aid of the USA’s National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Malaysia’s Women’s Aid Organisation via an online fundraiser in which a 1-million pixel mystery collage of 4 to 6 globally known Celebrity Male Role Models will be unveiled online as donors “buy” each pixel for one US dollar..
Like WRC, The Pixel Project chooses to focus on positive male role models from different walks of life to demonstrate that men have a major role to play in breaking the cycle of violence against women. We want to show that men can lead by example and build successful lives without violence.
As part of their efforts to recruit Celebrity Male Role Models for the mystery collage, The Pixel Project is launching their first Voters’ Choice Celebrity Male Role Model campaign through which a worldwide audience votes for an actor to be included in our A-list line-up which includes a Nobel Prize Winner and a Pulitzer Prize winner.
The two nominees with the most votes will be invited to donate JUST 45 MINUTES of their time to have their picture taken for the collage and to join the global community in saying “It’s time to stop Violence Against Women. Together.”
The superstar nominee who accepts the invitation will be revealed through the Pixel Reveal fundraiser which will be launched in the second half of 2010.
Voting is open from 17 May 2010 – 17 June 2010 and you are invited to key in your vote and sign the online petition.
