Gender Roles In Hip Hop

I discovered this documentary (or at least the promotional clip above) by filmmaker and anti-sexist activist Byron Hurt via the circuitous route of the comments section of this blog, which, in turn, landed in my inbox via Google Alerts.

I've always had a divisive relationship with hip hop, on the one hand in love with beats and rhymes and on the other, unable to relate to the violent imagery often (but not always) contained in the lyrics.

Hurt's documentary, which I am looking forward to seeing in its entirety, addresses these issues of masculinity, sexuality and gender politics.

This film is called Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes. It is a wonderful film in the small discipline that is masculinity studies.
