On June 5, 2007, the White Ribbon Campaign hosted their 9th annual North By Northeast Benefit Concert the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto.

The concert, which benefited the fight to end violence towards women, was a fun and energetic collaboration of many artists, sponsors and volunteers, and showcased the music of legendary Canadian artist Neil Young. The music was performed by some of Canada’s hottest talent and the enthusiastic crowd showed their appreciation, singing along to the music. Performers included Jill Barber, Chris Brown, Luke Doucet, Kathryn Rose, Melanie Doane, Emilie Claire Barlow, Jeremy Fisher, Kevin Hearn, Jim Creeggan and Tyler Stewart of the Barenaked Ladies, Justin Rutledge, and the return of Ron Sexsmith, Kim Mitchell and Ian Thornley, among others, who rocked it out for a great cause. This event was hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, Host of “Q” on CBC Radio One.

During the last song of the night, when everyone thought it was over, Kim Mitchell invited all the artists to join him on stage for an incredible rendition of “Keep on Rocking in the Free World”, ending the night on a very high note.

The concert has been the White Ribbon Campaign’s single largest and most high profile fundraising event since 1997. The concert has been a highlight of the NXNE festival, and in our mind is a unique event.
